MY BACKGROUND
Daniel Lichtman MA (Couns Psych)
My interest in psychology didn’t begin in a lecture theatre. It began much earlier, through a deep dive into Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice during my early 20s in India and Nepal. At a time when I was struggling to make sense of myself and the world, mindfulness gave me something practical, a way to work with my own mind rather than be ruled by it. That early experience quietly shapes everything I do with clients today.
I have been a mental health therapist since 2004, working primarily with folks navigating the kinds of challenges that don’t resolve themselves, difficult relationships, workplace stress, emotional patterns that keep repeating no matter how hard you try to change them. Over the years I have worked extensively with professionals across demanding fields including law, finance, medicine and aviation, people who are accomplished and capable in some areas of life and yet still find themselves stuck when it comes to their inner world and their relationships.
Fifteen years working as an attachment-based couples therapist has given me a rare depth of understanding of relationship dynamics, and heavily informs the way I now help individuals cultivate healthier, more satisfying relationships.
My work includes two decades of experience leading groups and workshops on mens mental health, work that has given me a breadth of perspective that I bring into every individual session.
My approach draws on a range of evidence-based modalities including Schema Therapy, EMDR and ACT alongside a deep grounding in attachment theory and mindfulness. I work in a way that is warm and collaborative, but also direct. I have a good BS detector and I’m not afraid to use it, gently but honestly, when the moment calls for it. Clients can expect to feel genuinely supported and sometimes challenged. That combination is usually where the real work happens.
The real wellspring of my knowledge and wisdom is my own relationships, as a husband, a father of two daughters, a son and a friend. Those relationships have taught me more about what it means to love, struggle, repair and grow than anything I have read or studied.
HOW I WORK
This isn’t just a place to talk. It’s a place to work.
With twenty years of experience as a mindfulness and attachment-based therapist, and drawing on a range of evidence-based modality training, I help you identify the emotional patterns driving your behaviour and develop practical sustainable strategies to change them.
Whether you are navigating a difficult or high conflict person or relationship, burned out at work, recovering from trauma or just want to be more effective at managing life’s challenges, we will work together to build the clarity, tools and confidence to make better decisions and break free from patterns that no longer serve you.
This isn’t just a place to talk. It’s a place to work. Rather than simply being heard, you’ll actively work through your challenges and develop more effective ways of living. That means moving beyond anger, avoidance, people pleasing or numbing out, coping strategies that have a valid origin story but are now limiting your life.
