The Accountability Project
A Men’s Group in Elwood.
For men who take self examination seriously but themselves less so; who want to handle the stressors and anxieties of modern life more effectively; who want their work, life, their parenting and their relationships to thrive; and who want to be part of a community of other men
Get in Touch
Daniel Lichtman, MA (Couns Psych) MP (Clin Psych) ∙ Registered Psychologist, Melbourne
A small, closed group of eight men who meet in person each week, led by registered psychologist Daniel Lichtman.
It runs as a structured block of ten weekly sessions: long enough to do real work and contained enough to commit to.
We can see our own actions – and ways out – more clearly when we witness it in someone else. We feel empowered by supporting other men, and accountable for our growth week on week.
A band of brothers is built in these groups. Men have been sitting in a circle talking about men’s business for thousands of years. We are just continuing the tradition.

What We Examine
Each week the group takes up a topic for each man to work through where he sits with it, what it costs him, where it trips him up, and where his strength in it lies. Topics include:
- How we relate to ourselves as a son, and as a father.
- How we relate to money.
- How we relate to anger.
- How we relate to addiction, whatever form it takes.
- How we relate to sex and sexuality.
- How we relate to shame or pride.
- How do we show up and not show up in relationships.
One man describes his relationship to the issue, and the men across from him recognise something of themselves in it. The patterns come into view more clearly. Over the weeks the room becomes a place where these things can be looked at honestly, without performance, alongside other men doing the same work.
Why a Group Rather Than Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is valuable, and for many men it is the right starting point. A group offers something different. Here, the parts of you that stay hidden one to one have somewhere to show up. The defences that work everywhere else, the humour, the competence, the self reliance, become visible in a setting where they can be looked at directly. And honest reflection from other men, who have no particular reason to flatter you, is something most men get very little of in adult life.
